Laborers
Last week I checked out the one month old Clyfford Still Museum in Denver. While I am not a big fan of abstract art, I am glad I visited the museum as I now have a better appreciation for Clyfford Still – one of the most important American artists of the 20th century.
I liked this guy’s early work – especially his series of paintings of American laborers (see photo above). Clyfford Still had much empathy for the working class. He refused to idealize workers as was done by other artists at the time. His later works are more abstract but interesting nevertheless.

Another highlight of this small museum was the interactive display on the first floor. Users can learn how world events influenced art at that time and in particular, the artist himself.
The building itself is an impressive work of contemporary architecture. I liked the concrete walls and latticed concrete ceiling which allows different tonalities of light to emerge into the museum throughout the day.

this pcjoert is probably the cooles thing going right now other than adjaye’s contemporary [which is way cool but lacks funding right now]. we usually have an “art-walk” the first friday of every month in different areas of the city, and the mayor usually shows up for support. real estate is ridiculous, so that means restaurants are popping up everywhere, as well as new housing pcjoerts. denver, like any other US city, is hoping that libeskind’s museum [and the art scene in general] will do wonders for it’s culture & economy with tourism & the like. now if we can just get the rockies to make the playoffs…
Yeah Denver has really improved over the years. I’ve been tempted a few times to move out there as I love the mountains, the weather and the cultural scene. It’s a very impressive, underrated city.
